The Venky Way!!

In a glittering career spanning 27 years with over 60 feature films, actor Daggubati Venkatesh still has the same philosophy towards cinema – to entertain the audience. A figure of humility and class, Venky (as he is fondly called) is excited about his upcoming film Drushyam, a remake of the Malayalam hit Drishyam. “I think this will be a path-breaking film for me. The movie has been shot really well and has fantastic screenplay. It is commercially viable and yet has emotions that people like to watch. We have maintained the essence of the original film and I think Drushyam will really strike a chord with the audience,” he says of the film.

From Gharshana to Sankranthi to Eenadu (remake of The Wednesday), Venkatesh has starred in over 20 remakes throughout his career, earning him a tag of ‘Remake king’. The actor, however, he doesn’t like to restrict himself to remakes alone and finds it unnecessary to label him just as such. “While I have enjoyed doing remakes, all the Filmfare and Nandi awards which I have received in my career have been for straight films. A lot of people keep calling me a remake hero but I personally don’t see them any differently from other films. For me, every movie is a challenge,” he explains.

A superstar in his own right, Venkatesh has no qualms about sharing screen space with other stars in the industry. After essaying the role of an elder brother to Mahesh Babu in Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu, the actor will now be sharing screen space with Pawan Kalyan in his upcoming film Gopala Gopala. “It was a conscious decision on my part. I wanted to act with the younger lot. They are very talented and successful and have become huge stars in the industry today. I wanted to work with them and adapt to their style. I feel the Telugu audience also needs multi-starrers as they want to see their favourite stars together on screen,” he shares, adding that he’s looking forward to work with Pawan Kalyan, who will be joining him on the sets of Gopala Gopala in two weeks time.

Over the years, the actor has established himself as a family hero with most of his movies striking a connect with the family audience, as compared to the out-and-out masala entertainers which the industry usually churns out. “Majority of my films are family driven but I have done all kinds of films. From action to comedy to family dramas, I have been fortunate to be able to work in different kinds of movies and luckily the audience has accepted me. It was never a conscious decision to be a ‘family hero’ but if that’s what works with the audience, then I am fine with that,” he says candidly.

Having worked with a number of directors over the years, Venky feels that he always goes by the script rather than the person, while choosing his movies. “My movies are always a combination of a good script, direction and acting. My priority has always been cinema as a whole. You find movies in the industry these days where the success of a film is totally dependent on the hero or the director, but I don’t work that way. For me, cinema is the real hero and requires effort from everybody,” he explains.

A huge sports lover, Venkatesh is the captain of Telugu Warriors representing Tollywood in the Celebrity Cricket League. He is also often seen cheering for the Hyderabad Sunrisers franchise during the Indian Premier League. Like the rest of the world, Venky too has caught the FIFA fever and is glued to the ongoing world cup in Brazil. When asked who he was cheering for, he says, “It’s been a bit strange actually because a lot of good teams like Spain and Italy have been knocked out. Even Argentina has not performed to its full potential yet and got through because of Messi’s brilliance. I think Brazil and the Netherlands are looking the strongest right now but as we have seen so far, the world cup is really unpredictable and an underdog team can win it too.”

Directed by Srirpriya, Drushyam also features Meena and Nadiya in important roles and will hit screens on July 11.
